August 6. 2008           9:00 a.m. to 11:00 a.m.

                                    1:00 p.m. to 3:00 p.m.

                                    5:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m.

                                    1:00 p.m. to 3:00 p.m.

New students entering Fulton High School from out-of-state and freshmen will need an Illinois physical.  A form is available online at riverbendschools.org/formsandlinks or in the Main Office.  New students will also need proof of residence in the River Bend School District such as a rent receipt, electric bill or any other proof of residency that they may have.  If the student has a transcript from their former school or a report card, it would be very helpful.

Tech Prep Programs at FHS

Fulton High School works with Whiteside Area Career Center and Sauk Valley Community College to provide a Tech Prep program for our students.  We have outlined courses that should be taken during a student’s last two years of high school and two years at Sauk Valley Community College which, if successfully completed, will prepare the student for a job in several careers.  If anyone is interested in any of the careers, see Mr. Luker for a course sequence from grade 11 – college.   A list of careers may be found in the Tech Prep information section available in the Guidance section on the Web page.

Registration

Students have copies of their schedules for the fall semester.  They should have made all changes before noon on Friday, May 30.  Schedules they receive at registration will include lunch and advisory assignments.

Scholarship Applications

Juniors and seniors should check the red box on the file cabinet by Mrs. Wiersema’s desk at least once a week for new scholarship applications.  When students are filling out scholarship forms or writing letters, please be sure to type them or write neatly.  We now have information on the following scholarships.

  1. Whiteside County Democrats Scholarship – A $750 award will be awarded to a Whiteside County Graduate who will be attending Sauk Valley Community College. The student must be a registered voter in Whiteside County, must submit a short essay detailing his/her views, opinions, and involvement (or planned involvement) in the Illinois Democratic political process, and the selected student must participate and actively work in activities related to the election of Democratic candidates and Democratic Party functions.  The Party, however, realizes the recipient’s education and success are the recipient’s main goal.  The application deadline is June 27, 2008.

College and Military Scheduled Visits

Most colleges and universities only visit once a year at Fulton High School.  Students should try to attend first semester presentations.  Please sign up in Guidance a couple of days before the scheduled presentation you wish to attend.  Passes will be on Mrs. Wiersema’s desk the morning of the scheduled presentation.  If the College Representative calls and no one is signed up for the presentation, the College Rep will probably not come to Fulton High School first semester.

Selective Service

The law says that men must register when they turn 18 with the Selective Service System.  It is important for young men to register with Selective Service to stay eligible for programs and benefits connected to registration, such as college loans and grants, federal employment, job training, and driver’s license eligibility in most states.  You may register at www.sss.gov .

American School Correspondence Classes

Students may make up two failed classes (2 credits) by correspondence.  Exams at the end of each chapter need to be sent in after each exam is completed.  When you have completed all exams at the end of each chapter and sent them back to the American School, you may take your final exam in Guidance.  Do not wait and send in all exams at once. If you wait and send in all exams at once, it may take a couple weeks to get your final, because they will not send a final exam until you start sending in your end of chapter exams.  Then the final has to be completed and returned in the mail.  When they are correcting your exams and they have found you have failed an exam, it will take a couple weeks to get a replacement exam back to you to make up the failed exam. This could be a problem if the deadline is nearing for all work to be sent in.  All exams need to be mailed to the American School by April 15 in order to get a transcript back to Fulton High School before Graduation Day.  May is a very busy month for the American School as many other students are trying to finish their correspondence before Graduation.  Correspondence applications are available in Guidance and must be approved by the principal.  Applications must be signed by a counselor.  All fees must be paid and work completed before the American School will send a transcript to Fulton High School.
